Words Fail

I really don't know what to say about the tsunami that's struck throughout Southeast Asia today. I just don't have the words, though I've been browsing through news reports continuously today.

The word "tsunami" to me summons up thoughts of Hiroshige's prints. That image just hasn't cut it today.

Thousands dead. I really don't know what to say.

It is tragic. What is really bad is when your 23-yr-old brother is working over in China in a coastal city as an English teacher and b/c U.S. news doesn't do a large amount of coverage on this travesty, you are stuck in a family where people are struggling to figure out if the tsunami was/was not able to reach the Chinese coast!
My guess would be no, but it's only a guess. If you can give me the city, I've some friends in China I'd be happy to email, presuming it's still a problem.
Google news ought to let you see what's happening abroad, though. Xinhua: "BEIJING, Dec. 28 -- The tsunami that hit 7 Asian countries has already caused over 22 thousand deaths. No casualties to Chinese citizens have been reported yet apart from the death of one Taiwan traveler. However, the disaster has had a great influence on outbound travel to southeast Asian countries in China. [...] "With aftershocks still shaking some Indian Ocean rim countries, some worry that a tsunami could also hit China's coastal areas. However, Zhang Xiaodong from the National Seismic Bureau says it is unlikely a tsunami will hit the country. "'Historically, China's mainland was seldom hit by tsunamis, due to the many islands surrounding it which act as shields. And China has large areas of continental shelf, so the strength of waves would already be dampened before reaching the land.'"
No, that's okay A. Rickey. And Xinhua - thanks a lot! That definately helps!
